Vinyl or Fiber Cement? Choosing Siding for a South Carolina Home

August 11, 2026 Kyrios Construction

When a house needs new siding, most homeowners end up choosing between two materials: vinyl and fiber cement. Both can look great and last a long time. They just get there in different ways, and the right choice depends on your house, your budget, and how long you plan to stay.

Vinyl is the most common siding in the country for good reason. It is generally the more affordable option, it never needs painting, and it cleans up with a gentle wash. Modern vinyl comes in far more colors and profiles than it used to, including styles that look like wood lap or shakes. Its weak points are impact — hail or a stray baseball can crack it — and heat, since panels can warp where reflected sunlight hits them hard.

Fiber cement is a heavier board made from cement, sand, and wood fibers. It handles heat very well, resists impact, will not rot, and does not attract termites. It costs more up front, takes more labor to install, and needs repainting from time to time, but many homeowners like its solid feel and the crisp look of painted boards.

Here is the part that matters more than the material: what is behind it. Siding is only as good as the house wrap, flashing, and sheathing underneath. In our humid climate, water that gets behind siding at a window, door, or roof line can quietly rot the wall for years before it shows. That is why we check the sheathing and flash every opening properly, whichever siding you choose.

If your current siding has soft spots, loose panels, gaps at the corners, or mildew that keeps coming back, it is worth having someone look at what is underneath before you decide.
